Following the inaugural Pro/Am boxing card staged at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) last month end, Berbicians would now be drafted into the mix due to the efforts of local bantamweight boxer and co-promoter, Orlan Rogers who, in association with Sanjay’s Jewelry, a business enterprise in the New Amsterdam Municipal Market, stages the second edition slated for the Rose Hall Estate Community Centre ground on Saturday March 20 next.
Eleven bouts are carded for the night including three professional and eight amateur bouts. In the first professional bout, Orlan ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers will match gloves with Paul Lewis (jnr) in a bantamweight clash, while Gladwin Dorway launches his professional career against Mark Murray in a catchweight affair. Quinda Rogers then opposes Lindener, Avlon Scotland in another catchweight fight. All of the professional fights would be over 4 rounds.
The amateur bouts have not been decided as yet as the promoters are awaiting approval from the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) for the names of those to comprise the card.
However, several amateurs from the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym have been short-listed for possible selection. They were advised to intensify training. Those boxers are Richard Williamson, Jamal Eastman, Joel Williamson and Marley Ross.
President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool, affirmed that a document has been dispatched to his organization seeking approval for the card. He lauded the initiative saying that boxing would eventually be the beneficiary.
The GBBC President intimated that his executives would huddle sometime soon to peruse the proposal logistics of the card before giving the thumbs up. Nevertheless, he envisages no problems.
Rogers has since disclosed that he will travel to Georgetown during the coming week to convene with GBBC officials.
Meanwhile, former Guyana National Light/heavyweight champion, Al Thomas, now a boxing coach, has re-sited from his base in Kwakwani and is assisting Rogers at the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym.
Thomas has had many epic battles locally and holds the distinction of being the only Guyanese to have sparred with former world heavy weight boxing great, Mohammed Ali when the latter fighter visited Guyana years ago.
Admission to the venue is five hundred dollars.
